Herpes Simplex Advisory Panel
The Herpes Simplex Advisory Panel was established in 1994. It comprises genitourinary physicians, virologists and general practitioners. There are approximately three meetings a year and for the last three years the Panel has run an open educational seminar. Panel costs have been supported by educational grants from GlaxoSmithKline (previously GlaxoWellcome).
The objectives of the Panel are:
- to encourage best practice in all aspects of the management of genital herpes
- to prepare and maintain evidence based guidelines on the management of genital herpes
- to conduct relevant research
- to become a forum to highlight and facilitate discussion of issues in genital herpes management
- to promote education in genital herpes management through an annual national educational event
Recent activities
- Preparing revised UK specialist national guidelines on the management of genital herpes (2001)
- Commenting on European guidelines and national guidelines for General Practitioners (Prodigy project) in the UK.
- Preparing Cochrane protocols
- Evaluating commercially available type –specific serological tests
- Surveying practitioners on their use of diagnostic tests
